Kurt Henning, Piano Tuner & Technician
Before Kurt began tuning pianos in 1998, he had been thoroughly trained as a musician at Northwestern University, earning a Bachelor of Music degree in double bass performance in 1988, and a Master’s degree in orchestral conducting in 1991. He has used his musical skills throughout the Midwest and on both coasts of the United States, as well as in Europe.
Kurt brings his profound love for music and music making to his work as a piano tuner. As a professional musician with over 20 years of performance experience, he knows what it’s all about. Whether he’s tuning for a professional recording session or for the seven-year-old who just started lessons, every tuning receives the same expert level of care and attention to detail.
In the summer of 1998, Kurt was trained and hired by the late Steven J. Wilson, a tuner who worked extensively in Chicago and the North Shore for almost two decades. Kurt worked with him for two years, five days a week, servicing an average of three pianos a day. In that time, Mr. Wilson employed Kurt repeatedly for recording sessions and concert tunings at Columbia College, for concerts and practice rooms at the Music Institute of Chicago, at Chicago Traxx Recording Studios, the Royal George Theatre for the hit show Forever Plaid, and for various venues including: churches, synagogues, schools, recital halls, restaurants, and other studios. He also employed Kurt extensively to help fully re-regulate grand and vertical piano actions.
As an independent tuner since 2000, Kurt has repeatedly tuned, repaired, and regulated pianos for the North Shore Theatre and Starlight Theatre of Wilmette, the Buffalo Grove Park District, the Park Ridge Gilbert & Sullivan Society, for public schools in Winnetka, Chicago, Naperville, Joliet, and Aurora, for the Rhythm Café (a high-end Chicago recording studio), several of the leading Chicagoland piano stores, houses of worship too numerous to list, and in literally thousands of homes throughout Chicago and the suburbs. He tuned the pianos at the University of St. Francis in Joliet for the past 15 years (2003 to 2018).
Kurt recently returned to Denver (his hometown) and is looking forward to serving you and your piano needs.
